Oud is agarwood: Aquilaria wood that, once infected by a mould, forms a dark fragrant resin, distilled into oil or burned as incense. It smells deep, woody and smoky with an animalic edge, anchors the base of a perfume, and has been the heart of Arabian perfumery for centuries.
