Vanilla
Vanilla comes from the cured pods of an orchid, fermented until their scent develops, with Madagascar the best-known source. It smells sweet, creamy and balsamic, settles in the base to give warmth and softness, and is often reinforced with synthetic vanillin so it lasts longer.
