Dia Man Amouage
Amouage released Dia Man in 2002, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour for men. Incense is present from the first moment, dry and slightly ashy, with the green warmth of cardamom and a bitter orange peel cutting across it while labdanum lays down a sticky resin underneath. The middle softens into flowers without turning sweet: peony and ylang-ylang, plum lending a dark fruited edge, orris root keeping the whole thing powdery and cool. Later the woods take over, vetiver earthy and dry, Brazilian rosewood clearer and lightly spiced, while leather adds a tanned smoky grain and amber and patchouli warm the last hours. The character is restrained and formal, more smoke and powder than fruit or flower. It suits cool weather and covered light, autumn and winter, daytime as readily as evening, and offices or dinner tables where a dry resinous perfume is more welcome than a loud one.
