Chanel launched Chanel No 5 Parfum in 1921, composed by Ernest Beaux for women. The opening is bright and expansive, driven by a significant presence of aldehydes that lend an airy, sparkling quality. Ylang-ylang introduces a rich, creamy yellow floral note, while neroli, bergamot, and lemon provide a fresh, clean citrus lift. The heart unfolds into a complex floral bouquet, where iris and orris root contribute a powdery, earthy depth. Jasmine and rose offer classic white and rich floralcy, respectively, with lily-of-the-valley adding a green, dewy touch. The base deepens with civet, which gives an animalic warmth, alongside soft musk. Sandalwood and moss provide a woody, earthy foundation, while amber adds a resinous warmth. Vanilla introduces a subtle sweetness, and vetiver and patchouli ground the scent with dry, earthy woodiness. This results in a powdery, aldehydic floral character with a musky, woody, and subtly animalic depth, suitable for formal occasions, evening wear, and cooler seasons.
